The Prepper that comes from the Arctic

Español a bajo

Hello Claus,
Clearly in Spain we have problems opposite to yours, you have the cold and we have the heat and water drought, but I think that some advice can be equally valid with some adaptation to the local situation.

Energy
Clearly you have to have solar panels. Now they are quite cheap compared to 15 years ago, and although the price has risen a lot they are still cheap. So I advise you to buy as many solar panels as possible, even if you can’t mount them all on the roof. Better to have it in the garage and not use it than you don’t have it and need it.

With the cold and the little heat, I advise you to use lead batteries. Possibly of the tubular type for electric forklifts of the models used to move pallets.
The 6 Volts are the cheapest, a little better are the 2V OPZ type with opaque container. These have to be inside a metal or painted wooden box, to prevent them from deforming over time. Then there are the transparent OPZS, much more expensive but they can last you 20-30 years.
I use the 6V ones 🙂
Inverter: I use Axpert 24V-3000W PWM hybrid inverters together with another external PWM regulator.
Why PWM instead of MPPT? Well, due to the voltage with PWM it can be at most 80V, while with MPPT it exceeds 120V and even 900V.
At 120V in direct current you are not going to tell… you die directly…
With 220V in alternating current (AC) nothing happens, but with direct current, you stay glued to the cables and you can’t let go… and that’s why you die.

For this reason I use the PWM system although I am aware that my boards do not perform what I would get with MPPT regulators.
To compensate for this, I have put 4 extra plates and I am calm. My system does not even reach 40V. I could touch a child and nothing would happen to him.

For cooking I recommend induction plates. The ideal is to use induction hobs when:
a) there is sun
b) the batteries are charged
c) you have to prepare the midday meal.
The energy saving is very remarkable, and you literally use the sun to cook. Clearly you can’t do it all year round, but even in winter there are brilliant sunny days.

Gas
I advise you to look at the topic of creating Biodigesters for the creation of Natural Gas (methane) in cold climates. I have read that it can be done and the results are usually good. The idea is to put a biodigester in a greenhouse and take advantage of human and animal excrement to make methane gas that can be used to cook with gas, or to run a 220V generator.
Clearly in winter at your latitudinal level you won’t be able to produce much gas, but if in the rest of the year you save paid energy using the free energy of the sun and natural gas, you will be able to buy many gas cylinders to spend the winter.

Wind power.
It may be that in the north there are constant winds that serve to generate current, but houses are not usually built where there are these constant winds, because it would be very problematic to heat them, so it is probably better not to spend money on this. I have had it for 15 years and it has served me 2 or 3 times. For the rest of the time I use the windmill to find out where the slight breeze is coming from… €1500 spent for nothing.
But I repeat, there are places where there is a lot of wind, especially during the entire night in winter, and in this case it could be a good investment. You have to carefully evaluate. But in normality, better to spend the money for a second backup photovoltaic system instead of spending the same for a wind turbine

Thermal isolation
I am sure that I have little to teach the people of the north about how to insulate the house, so I will only emphasize that insulation is essential.

Food
During the spring, summer and autumn months, many canned meat, fruit and vegetables have to be prepared to be used in winter. I have written an article on how to use a pressure cooker to preserve delicious meats in glass. It is in Spanish but there are many photos. Later I will make the English version
I’m sure there are many Prepper groups in your language that can give you lists of products that you have to stock in your pantry.

Computers
I personally believe that a prepper has to try to save something from the digital world around us as well. There are useful things that I will miss the day they disappear, such as wikipedia, and many YouTube video channels that deal with useful arguments in the event of the collapse of our society. So I have mounted on some old laptops and some raspberryPi4 some services that I consider useful. I will talk about this in another article later.

El Prepper que viene desde el Artico

Hola Claus,
